The three-day inaugural World Series of Mahjong, held at the Wynn Macau Resort on June 15-17, ended play at 12:30am in the early morning of June 18. A total of 265 mahjong players from 10 countries, including China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, U.S., and the U.K. participated in the tournament. The championship went to Mr. Hui Chung-Lai from Hong Kong with a point total of 423.11 points. Mr. Hui has played mahjong for more than 50 years. He received a check for US$500,000 plus the coveted golden mahjong medallion from the tournament spokesperson Mr. Philip Chan and WSOM CEO Mr. John Hardyment. Two other Hong Kong players placed 2nd and 4th , with 3rd place going to Taiwanese actress Ms. Yu Chieh-Ping.
The tournament was extensively covered by the media, with representatives from more than 60 different companies present on-site, including CNN, Reuters, AP and many other news services.
The tournament was produced for television by a crew of over 50 television experts, and broadcast to more than 40.0 million households in Asia and other parts of the world. The program was produced as a 13-episode series in three languages – English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
